My 21st Century Literacies

In today's day and age, being aware of and literate in the new digital technologies is more important than ever. Social media connects us with a multitude of different people, and our online identities affect future career prospects. Navigating this modern environment thus necessitates utilizing various digital skills and literacies effectively. These are some of my digital literacies that make me a valuable asset to any team.

Problem Solving

Problems and setbacks with projects inevitably arise whether working individually or with a group. Thus it becomes important to be able to quickly and effectively assess the situation and propose solutions that keep the project moving forward. Through my programming experience, I have refined my ability to take what I've already learned and apply it to new situations in order to solve programming problems in an effective manner.

Communicating Clearly

Especially when working as part of a team, it is extremely important to be able to clearly express ideas to other members through a variety of mediums. It ensures that everyone stays on the same page and makes their ideas about the project heard. My writing course in my senior year of high school helped me refine this skill, showing me the importance of what types of words and sentences I use in order to communicate what I am thinking.

Collaborating Fluidly

When working with others, being able to make compromises and ensuring that everyone plays a role in the project is essential to accomplishing the goal. My experience at the Catholic Leadership Institute has helped me to identify when I need to compromise and how I can recognize everyone's contribution to the project.

Information Analysis

Especially in the digital world, information comes at us from every angle, so we need to be able to find the information we need and analyze it critically to determine its value given the situation. Throughout my schooling I have done a multitude of research papers and projects, training me in getting information relevant to the subject and deciding how it fits in to my research as a whole.

Technologically Proficient

To be an active learner, technological skills must be utilized to continue to gain new skills and refine old ones. It becomes important to be able to use modern digital technologies as a tool for further learning outside the classroom. I have been able to involve myself in online classrooms as well as utilize online tutorials to build my coding skills, and I aim to research further topics in the future that I could learn online.
